Lower Helena Association logo

The Lower Helena Association (LHA) formed in 2011, focuses on the area of the Helena River from Military Road in Midland through to the suburbs of Hazelmere, Woodbridge, Guildford, and South Guildford (approx.  6km stretch).

The group plans and undertakes restoration projects which improve the riparian areas of the Lower Helena River by controlling weeds and planting native species, with the ultimate goal of providing a corridor of native vegetation all the way along the river. In addition, the group plant rushes and sedges to improve water quality in the Helena and Swan Rivers.

LHA activities range from hands-on work such as hand weeding and planting seedlings, to desk-based activities like promoting group activities, assisting with funding applications and organising social events. The LHA is also a founding member of the Helena River Alliance; the Helena River Alliance is a community grass-root group that focuses on improving the future outcomes for the Helena River Catchment mainly via activism, and engagement with local and state planning and government agencies, and awareness campaigns within the local communities along the Helena River.

Location

The Helena River’s headwaters originate in the Darling Scarp, before traversing the coastal plain and discharging into the Swan River. Helena River flows seasonally with a largely natural catchment comprising bushland, state forest and national parks. The catchment and the various land types within it, including conservation and natural areas, horticulture, farming and residential.

The Helena River Catchment is managed as three separate sub-catchments, the Upper, Middle and Lower, mainly because of the large variation in landuse across the catchment, but also because of the implications and impacts of the major dams on the catchment and waterways. The LHA focuses mainly on the urbanised areas of the lower Helena catchment from Midland down to South Guildford.
