Green Lab is an engaging citizen science and action program empowered by Millennium Kids and designed by young people, to protect, assess and monitor green spaces in their local community.
It provides opportunities for active participation in environmental conservation activities.
Green Lab projects can start in new areas or partner with community groups to protect greenspaces and creates opportunities for intergeneration knowledge and passion to be passed on.
The Millennium Kids approach is to provide activities about whatever kids are interested in. If they choose to do it, they will probably love it! This approach has been tried and tested by Millennium Kids for 30 years and it has been recognised internationally as best practice. It involves four main components: nature exploration, creative expression, youth-led decisions, and action learning.
Pilot Green Lab program in the Susannah and Wooroloo Brook Catchments.
Millennium Kids (MK) partnered with the Department of Biodiversity Conservation and Attractions (DBCA), the City of Swan and the Susannah Wooroloo Catchment Group (SWCG) to develop a pilot program that engaged the wider community including youth, families and children in participating in regular catchment group activities from May to September 2024.
The collaboration has been a big success, engaging over 30 families and 70 children in activities including bird and macroinvertebrate surveys, planting and nature-based art activities. The program was a great experience for families and young people, connecting them with nature, each other and the Susannah Wooroloo Catchment Group.
